Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is an endocrine disease, developed in consequence of relative or absolute deficiency of insulin hormone or the disorders in its interrelation with organism cells, that results in the development of stable growth of glucose content in blood (hyperglycemia). One of the most early and frequent displays of diabetes mellitus is the disorder in secretory function of salivary glands, leading to xerostomia, which is accompanied by complaints of dryness in oral cavity. The diabetic complications of the functions of salivary glands are supposed to be connected to autoimmune process of degeneration of salivaproducing cells. Diabetes, anyway, touches the main components of etiology and pathogenesis of generalized diseases of periodontium: bacterial invasion, protective peculiarities of organism and tissues of periodontal complex, reparative characteristics of the latest, blood circulation and metabolism in them. The data, given in the review, speak of the leading role of diabetes mellitus in the development of destructive changes in periodontium.
